There are a number of reasons that research peptides are labeled “not for human consumption.” To explain in full would require multiple pages, as this is a multifaceted issue involving multiple factors relating to the F.D.A. and the pharmaceutical industry that most of the general public is unaware of. We opted to condense it down to the primary elements to the best of our ability:

F.D.A. approval costs
The biggest factor is that the F.D.A. approval pathway can cost millions of dollars to pursue—often a prohibitive barrier for smaller organizations.

Scale of required trials
Mandatory preclinical (animal) and clinical (human) trials require large budgets on top of the approval pathway— feasible for large firms, difficult for smaller ones.

Patent limitations

“Off-label” competition
Doctors may prescribe approved drugs “off-label,” broadening competition with major players even when peptide counterparts exist.
Important clarification: This is not to say that companies or partners are distributing unevaluated drugs to the public—there are many studies that explore safety and efficacy, just not always at the scale required for certain regulatory pathways.
